With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting the Indian economy, the government rolled out a $23 billion emergency relief and economic stimulus package. The initial effort was a combination of direct support for individuals and targeted protections for health workers. Additional financial stimulus measures are expected over coming weeks.

To help provide much needed food for the poor during the crisis, the relief package will deliver up to 6 kilograms of wheat, rice, and pulses to impoverished families. The government will also provide cooking gas canisters to poor families and direct payments to struggling seniors and women.

For medical and health care workers on the front lines. the government will provide health insurance.

Since the initial package, the government has since announced a release of tax refunds to small business worth Rs 18,000 crores.
